Despite living in a world where there is such abundance in food options, variety often takes a back seat to our normal, comfortable dietary habits. We cook the same meals. We buy the same foods from the grocery store. We eat at the same restaurants; we are creatures of habit! Having too many choices can often be overwhelming. However, once we embrace such abundance, then we open the doors to healthy opportunities. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), vitamins and minerals found in a well balanced, nutritious diet “are vital to boost immunity and healthy development.” Furthermore, eating a variety of healthy, whole foods can prevent and help treat various diseases especially “diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, some types of cancer and skeletal conditions.” Despite the numerous benefits of eating such a variety, a recent study found that when recommended to eat a variety of foods, individuals consumed more of both healthy and unhealthy foods. Over-consumption can contribute to obesity and other health related conditions. Though more research is required to better understand how and why such a recommendation can be directly linked to obesity, (I think) it is safe to assume that there is a lesson to be learned here. Everything in moderation including a variety of whole foods. Use this simple guide below to help you branch out of your normal diet routine and embrace the varieties of foods in front of you — in moderation, of course.
