Thank Your Hardships

A part of practicing gratitude in life is having the ability to see the light despite the dark. Just as a rainbow peeks through the clouds after a thunderstorm, gratitude can be a reminder that both the rain and sun are things to be grateful for.  Sometimes we experience stress for prolonged periods of time. Overwhelm, sadness, fear, anger, disappointment, and grief are all part of a normal emotional spectrum that one may experience through hardship. Staying in these negative emotions for extended periods of time however, can lead to more severe or chronic mental health concerns. The good news is that by focusing on what is good in life via the practice of gratitude, what was once negative can more easily, and quickly turn positive.

One way I suggest my clients begin the practice of gratitude is by thinking or saying something they are grateful for every morning before they get out of bed. It can be tough to focus on things that are good in life when the brain is not naturally hardwired to do so. I also suggest using quotes as a way of recognizing that even in the negative, there is a positive. So below are some of my personal favorite quotes that can help you see the rainbow through the storm.

“I have endured, I have been broken, I have known hardship, I have lost myself. But I stand, still moving forward, growing stronger each day. I will never forget the harsh lessons in my life. They made me stronger”. — Unknown author.
“Pause and Remember – You will make it to the other side of this hardship. One day you will look back with wiser eyes, understanding, and gratitude. Hang in there! — Jenni Young
“Loss and hardships are unavoidable in life, however, “how” we deal with our pain is what will make us or break us.”
— Melanie Willard
“Gradually I learned to cease looking upon challenges as difficulties and began to see tense situations as opportunities to put my growing love to use.” — Eknath Easwaran
“Things work out best for those who make the best of how things work out.” — John Wooden

And if you seek religious quotes:

“Stop, take a deep breath, hold onto the peace that comes with knowing God is good, even when your circumstances are not. He has a plan, it may be different than yours, but that’s okay, his is better.” — Michael Bliss
Serenity prayer: “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time; Enjoying one moment at a time; Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace; Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it; Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will; That I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him Forever in the next.”

It's not easy to always see the brighter things in life, but with gratitude, the rainbow can be seen beyond the clouds.
