With all that’s happened in the world over the past year and is still ongoing, we’ve all been challenged to think outside the box to find creative ways to get movement and exercise back into our daily routines. If you’re on social media, you will find fitness trainers and yoga practitioners alike providing content for all fitness levels using various household items to help people be accountable and consistent while at home.
What is Tik Tok?
A video-sharing app called TikTok has caught the attention of millions of people and has families across the world, from grandparents to children, exercising, dancing, and lip-syncing to their favorite songs. The app allows you to hear the music of your choice out loud and records you while you perform a choreographed dance/exercise routine. We found TikTok through a neighbor who would be outside for hours dancing in front of her phone. Curious indeed, I downloaded the app and immediately became addicted to the variety of content, the talent of many, and most of all, the creativity that was displayed. Now, I’m pretty active, and love to exercise, but dancing on camera is way out of my comfort zone. Fortunately, my 10-year-old daughter is determined to teach me choreography to the latest dance moves. If you have school-aged children in your home, it’s most likely they already know about TikTok. This platform has given me the chance to bond with my daughter even more because I’m willing to put effort into learning some new dance moves. It’s no wonder that dancers have lean bodies as they practice for endless hours over and over until they’re satisfied with their performance. My daughter is a perfectionist, so we’ve averaged 10-12 takes on just one 15-20sec video clip. That translates into about 15-20 minutes of “we can do it better daddy” to get it just right.
How to Move at Home
In these unprecedented times, following stay at home orders can be very challenging because it’s a shift in normalcy. If you are having trouble finding the motivation to exercise at home, what better way to boost your endorphin levels by dancing with your children, having some fun, and tons of laughter along the way. Dancing and laughter are good for the soul and create a stronger bond between you and your family. Here’s one of my exercise TikTok videos with a good friend as we executed a coordinated plank dance challenge that was not only fun but a good workout. Go download TikTok, get familiar with the platform, and start practicing your dance/exercise moves so that you can bring some fun and energy back to your exercise routine while we navigate through this new norm.
