Morning or Evening? What time do I need to workout for better sleep?

Rise and Shine. It is time to get moving!

A morning workout is a great way to wake up and get your blood pumping, and also serves as an excellent choice for those of you who are busy during the day, yet desire a consistent workout regimen. Motivation and consistency aside though, the National Sleep foundation shares, “people who work out on a treadmill at 7:00 am sleep longer, experience deeper sleep cycles, and spend 75 percent more time in the most restorative stages of slumber than those who exercise at later times that day.” When you get the recommended amount of sleep for a healthy adult (7-9 hours a night), you may also notice benefits such as:

  • Boosted body weight management
  • Decreased stress response
  • Improved mental alertness
  • Diabetes prevention
  • Improved heart health
  • Reduced inflammation in the body
  • Decreased symptoms of Depression
  • Enhanced immune system….and so much more!

So it is clear that getting in your workout in the morning rises with excellent benefits, but what about those of you who simply cannot get out of bed any earlier than you do?Don’t fret. There's still time!

An evening workout has some positives as well. Studies show that your body is at a decreased risk of injury and able to perform complex movements and strength exercises when the muscles are warmer in the evening. Moreover, cardiovascular exercises such as running, cycling or walking may increases your core temperature a few degrees for about four hours. Then your body begins to cool, enabling it to get into a restful state for improved sleep. Another plus if you are an evening, outdoor exerciser, is that you can get your daily recommended dose of Vitamin D, which can improve your sleep-wake cycle. So you see, a morning workout definitely has its place in your life, BUT is not the only time you can exercise for improved sleep.
